Commission Manager: Advertiser Guide

Note: The Commission Manager has replaced this previous Commission Manager tool.

Overview

Commission Manager is a tool that gives advertisers full flexibility to manage their publisher commissions. You can set standard rates on your programme, or choose to reward publishers individually. You can schedule campaigns and promotional commission rate changes at a granular level like brands, departments, product categories, customer loyalty, transaction source and more. The Commission Manager keeps the information about what rates your publishers were on at a certain time in the past and takes it into account when transactions are amended. It also gives you a view of current and upcoming rates for your publishers.

Commission Types

There are 3 types of commission you can set in Commission Manager:

  • Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) is the amount that an advertiser is willing to pay for a sale. The cost per acquisition may be set as a percentage or fixed value. For this, set the transaction type to Sale and choose a Commission type to be a percentage or fixed value.
  • Cost Per Lead (CPL) is where the advertiser pays a publisher an agreed fee for each qualified lead to the advertiser's website. For example, a user signing up to the advertiser's website. For this, set the transaction type to Lead (in this case commission type is always Fixed).
  • Cost Per Order (CPO) is the Publisher Commission plus the Network Fee. This is only available for CPO Programmes and is shown as the Advertiser Cost value.

Accessing the Commission Manager Tool

In the navigation bar, click Commission > Commission Manager.

Using the Commission Manager

The Commission Manager consists of three tabs:

  • Commission Groups
  • Publisher Commission Rates
  • Timeline

The Commission Groups Tab

The Commission Groups tab is where you define the standard commission payment structure for all your publishers.

You can use commission groups to reward publishers differently based on product category, customer loyalty (new customer or returning customer), or transaction device. Simply enter a unique commission group code for each commission group and the right commission rates will automatically be applied to each specific sale.

Note: If you are an Awin Access self-managed client, you are limited to three commission groups which includes DEFAULT.

Default Commission Group

Transactions that don’t fall under any commission groups are processed based on the Default Commission Group.

How to Add a Commission Group

To create a commission group, click Edit Commission Groups, then click Add Commission Group. This creates a new table row where you can provide details for the commission group.

  • Commission Group Name: Use a unique, descriptive name to identify a specific group you want to pay commission for, so that it’s easy for you and your publishers to understand.
  • Description: Provide any additional details about the commission group, for your reference.
  • Transaction Type: Select Sale if you want to reward your publishers based on acquisition or purchase. Select Lead to reward them for user sign up / registration.
  • Commission Group Code: To help Awin track each sale and the associated commission through the "aw_parts" parameter in the tracking tag, each commission group must have a unique Commission Group Code . This code is also used when amending sales. For more information on tracking implementation, refer to the Advertiser Tracking Guide.

Note: If your account uses Commission Flexibility, tracking features function differently. For more information, refer to Commission Flexibility.

  • Commission Type: You can pay a fixed amount of commission for Lead and Sale transaction types, whereas you can pay only percentage amounts for Sale transactions.
  • Publisher Commission: Type the amount or percentage of commission to award for each sale associated to this commission group. This value represents your Programme Standard Commission Rates, which is used automatically to calculate publisher commission payouts if a custom commission rate does not exist for that publisher.

Viewing your Commission Groups

To make it easier to find and review relevant data, a menu option is available for each column:

  • The first sub-menu allows you to pin the columns right or left, as well as auto-size columns.
  • The second sub-menu allows you to filter the data for keywords. For example, use the filter to find a specific commission group.
  • The third sub-menu allows you to show and hide columns you want to show or hide from the table, to condense the dataset to a more manageable view.

To sort the data in ascending order, click the column header you want to sort by. To sort the data in descending order, click the column header a second time. To reset the data to the default order, click the column header a third time.

Editing a Commission Group

To edit a commission group, click Edit Commission Groups, then edit commission groups in the table. You can change the Commission Group Name, Description, Commission Type, and Publisher Commission/Advertiser Cost.

Note: You cannot change the transaction type, commission group code, DEFAULT commission group name, or DEFAULT commission group description.

To add or edit a large number of commission groups, select multiple of commission groups and copy them to an external file. To select a large dataset, select a cell, then drag the square in the right bottom corner.

Amended transactions use the Commission Group value from the exact time of the transaction. Amending the commission group only impacts transactions that take place after the amendment.

Exporting Commission Groups

To export and download a CSV file that contains the Commission Groups, click Options, then select Export Current Rate or Export Historical Rate. If you select Export Historical Rate, you must define the date and time for the historical rate you want to export.

Restrictions on Lowering Rates for Commission Groups

There are restrictions on how much and how often advertisers can lower the rates on Programme Standard Commission Rates. The default restrictions for lowering rates are:

  • Maximum 20% reduction each time
  • Once every 30 days
  • Informing Publishers at least seven days prior to the change

Note: These details can vary based on the terms and conditions of your individual contract.

Deleting a Commission Group

To delete a commission group, click Edit Commission Groups, then click the trash can icon. When you delete a commission group, you remove it from Programme Standard Commission Rates, as well as from all publisher commission rates.

The Publisher Commission Rates Tab

Publisher Commission Rates are specific rates that you can customise for your marketing activity plans. You can then schedule publishers to move on to those rates for a certain period of time.

In the Publisher Commission Rates tab you can create custom sets of rates for your publishers, as well as schedule rate changes for them.

For Publishers that are not on a specific commission rate, the values are set by default to the programme standard rates. The values for programme standard rates are the same as the rates on the Commission Groups tab.

Adding Commission Rates

To reward your publishers differently to your programme standard rates, you can create specific commission rates for specific publisher, and create a schedule to assign publishers to those rates for a selected period of time.

  1. Type a name for the commission rate that summarises the rate for you and your publishers. For example, 'Cashback', 'VIP rates', or 'Content Publishers'.
  2. Customise your commission for each Commission Group within these rates using the Commission Type and Publisher Commission columns.

Exporting Commission Rates

To export and download a CSV file that contains the commission rates, click Options, then select Export Current Rate or Export Historical Rate.

If you select Export Historical Rate, you must define the date and time for the historical rate you want to export.

Scheduling Publishers to Commission Rates

  • Once you create a commission rate, you can create a schedule to assign publishers to that rate by clicking the Person icon.
  • Choose the publishers that you want to assign to the selected commission rate, and define when and for how long they are assigned to that rate. If you want the selected publishers to remain on those rates indefinitely, set the end date to Ongoing.
  • Add a schedule description, for your reference. For example, 'Black Friday rates'. This is not visible to publishers.
  • If you set an end date for the schedule, you can choose to move the selected publishers to other rates automatically at the end of the schedule. Use the Revert to dropdown menu, and select the rate you want to revert to at the end of the schedule. This creates an extra schedule for those publishers that starts at the end date of the previous schedule, either with an indefinite end date, or until the beginning of the next schedule if you have already set one up.

Managing Active and Future Schedules

To manage publisher schedules, click the numbers in the Scheduled Publisher Changes column. These numbers represent how many schedules you have created for the each. To view a detailed list of schedules, click on a number in the Scheduled Publisher Changes column. The following options appear:

  • Stop Active Schedules: To automatically revert the publishers to the Programme Standard rates, click the Calendar icon.
  • Delete Future Schedules: To delete future schedules, click the Bin icon. This removes all schedules, but does not impact the current rates of the selected publishers.
  • View Publishers on particular schedules: To show the Timeline view for publishers on selected schedules, click the value in Publishers Selected column.

The Timeline Tab

The Timeline tab shows past, present, and future commission rates for your publishers over a period of time. You can select publishers to see a Timeline view. The timeline view consists of coloured bars that represent rates that each publisher is assigned to throughout the calendar timeline. Programme Standard Commission Rates are always blue, and other commission rates have other colours that represent different rates. If you change the rates during a schedule, the schedule is split automatically, to represent the schedule with the old rates and the schedule with the new rates.

To view past, current, and future rates for your Publishers, click Previous 60 days or Next 60 days, or use the date selector in the top right of the page.

To view more details for a commission rate, such as the name, start date, end date, and the range of commission, hover over the rate. To view detailed information for each commission group, click the rate you want to view.
